Thermal Mass & Unfilled Vein-Cut Travertine in High-Diurnal Climates
Soren Halvorsen, RIBA / SIA
Why dense quarry-selected limestone and radiant hydronic slabs outperform synthetic curtain-wall assemblies across 50-year residential lifespans.
High-diurnal alpine and desert sites punish lightweight glass boxes with violent HVAC load swings. By pairing 320mm thermally broken monolithic stone walls with low-temperature geothermal slab loops, interior radiant mean temperature stabilizes within ±0.6°C year-round while developing an irreplaceable mineral patina.
